Clamping Down on Cyber Crime
Clamping Down on Cyber Crime
More than 40% of micro and small businesses (MSBs) have been the victim of cyber crime in the past two years, research has shown.
A recent survey found that more than a third of MSBs have had to deal with a computer virus in that time, while nearly a fifth have fallen to an internet scam. For comparison, this rivals more “traditional” IT problems such as broken or damaged PC (36%), and dwarfs traditional forms of crime – only 3% had had to deal with a lost or stolen PC.
Other cyber crimes include identity fraud, data theft and phishing – the act of criminally and fraudulently acquiring sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.
RMT Accountants & Business Advisors is a supporter of the Get Safe Online initiative in the North East and, through its membership of the International Association of Accountants Innovation & Technology Consultants (IAAITC), has been working with the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) to deliver a simple and effective preventative measures for MSBs.
Partner Stephen Slater said "Micro and small businesses are failing to implement proper security and continuity plans as they are perceived as too complicated and expensive".
